Why does my gaming headset crackle more when I play older casino game titles?

Hi all, Why is there so much static in my headphones when I play vintage casino slot machines? It seems that some of the early-2000’s games with their primitive audio compression and inferior engines cause a ton of static in my headphones — any thoughts? Have others experienced this? How can I fix this? Thanks.

This has happened to me as well. Ancient games’ audio was compressed at too low a bitrate, yielding hiss when played through today’s headphones, which are far superior to those of yesteryear. Try another pair of headphones; if you must use the one you have, see if you can change the settings on your computer to lower the sampling rate or bit depth. Sound card effects like surround sound or 3D audio can also cause trouble for old games. Go into your sound settings and turn off whatever setting you have enabled that references surround- or 3D-sound technology. If all else fails, you can even try loading the games in a Windows compatibility mode. It may seem silly, but it can ameliorate problems of this sort. Or, find some high-definition remakes or community patches to the old casino games. They should include audio fixes.

The sound of older slot machines is stored in low-bit audio that would be fine if you were wearing cheap headphones. However, when you play it at high resolution on good headphones, the result is like listening to a cassette tape through studio speakers - lots of hiss. Turn down the volume of your headphones, or use “noise reduction” if your audio player has it. Otherwise, you can use an online converter to increase the bit rate if you’d like, which may help. Good luck and good gaming!
