Does running the game as administrator help if it crashes on startup?

But if I can't even start up the casino game emulator, because it crashes every time I try, will administrative privileges help? I have a new section of my site devoted to classic video games, so it would be really helpful to know how to get these emulators to work.

Start the emulator as administrator. Some emulators require more privileges than ordinary apps, so try clicking the .exe file with your right mouse button, then Run as administrator. If this doesn’t solve the problem, you’re dealing with a probable driver issue, an incompatibility problem, or a bad installation. Update your graphics drivers. Then, try setting the emulator to run under compatibility mode for older versions of Windows. For an older emulator, look for a new revision or a fork. In the end, visit the forums. The retro gaming community will be helpful about fixing such an issue. I’ve seen people getting Vegas slots working on XP machines.

Launching emulators with administrator privileges can often solve this issue if the emulator crashes at startup (possibly because it needs to read/write protected system files/folders). If this happens, try running your emulator as admin. However, if you can’t launch the program at all, try right-clicking and selecting “Run as Administrator. ” If it fails to launch, make sure the emulator is updated and compatible with your operating system, and try running compatibility troubleshooters in Windows or adjusting the graphics mode. It just might work!

Try running as Administrator, if it’s a permission problem. Emulators sometimes require access to system files and folders that aren’t normally accessible; right-click the executable then select run as administrator. If that fails, try downloading missing DLLs, updating your graphics driver, or using a different emulator. Give us some details about what you’re running and we’ll be more specific. Good luck getting those old games up and running!

If you need to run as admin, it’s because the emulator tries to access a file or resource which cannot be accessed as a standard user. In case of a quick crash, it should be your first attempt after checking if you are missing DirectX, have old graphics drivers, or are not using a compatible version. Right click on the emulator > Properties > Compatibility > Run as Admin > Try Older Windows. If that doesn’t work, consider other emulators than looking for corrupted game files.

Launching the emulator as an administrator might solve some startup problems, but only if you really need to do so. If the emulator fails immediately upon startup, make sure you have all the required Visual C++ Redistributables and .NET Framework versions installed. If you do, running as an administrator could help (and only if there's actually a permissions problem), then try. Or go with other emulators – perhaps that one just doesn’t work on your operating system.
