Mic problems in voice chat are infuriating, so here’s a couple of fast tips that I’ve found helpful. The endusers should make sure that they’re selecting the correct microphone on the audio settings for the game – they might have accidentally selected the wrong device. They can also check the input volume and then click the “test mic” button to see if the microphone even works within the game. Those who feel comfortable doing so can try updating their audio drivers (and roll back if needed since this can cause some strange audio issues). On Discord or other voice services, remind them to check the “push-to-talk” key, if using one, to make sure that is set correctly. They should also ensure the firewall/anti-virus isn’t blocking microphone access. On the side of those actually playing the game, restarting the game and application can sometimes reset audio issues. Make sure to advise them to check your operating system’s audio settings to ensure that the microphone hasn’t been disabled. These fixes should be presented as simple and straightforward steps so that the average person does not become overwhelmed. If they still need help, direct them to contact customer service with a clear explanation of what happened.

Audio problems during gameplay are no fun. Ensure your players choose the right mic in both their game and their operating system, check that they’re using a headset that works with Ventrilo (wired is preferred over a Bluetooth connection), and advise them to update their sound card driver and the game client. For lagging, try dropping the sample rate, or use an in-game voice chat plug-in like Discord linked directly to Ventrilo. Remind them to check that the mute button isn’t on and that their hardware is functioning properly! Maybe even create a sticky thread in the forums with these tips – it could save you a lot of headaches! Now go roll those dice, and keep your community rolling as well!
