How can I test if there's too much input lag during gameplay?
Hey all, I’m planning to broadcast an online casino game, and am concerned about input lag. How can I measure latency between controller input and visual feedback? Tools, tips, and tricks for gaming latency measurement appreciated!

To measure input lag in casino games, it’s best to employ a similar test to that done with sports games. You can set up a fast-action camera (such as your mobile phone’s slow-motion feature) to simultaneously capture what you’re playing on your monitor and your controller or keyboard. Then press the buttons and check when the results show up on-screen.
If you need more precise results, lag measuring applications such as LagMeter (from RTINGS) or FRAPS can provide frame latency. Your GPU’s dashboard utility – for example: NVIDIA Control Panel – enables you to see the frame rate and input lag of your graphics card.
A Another hack is to simply enable “VSync” on your graphics card driver and see what happens to the input delay. If you experience a significant increase in latency, try switching to G-SYNC or FreeSync (if available).
Set your in-game graphics to a reasonable level to maintain good performance but not at the expense of visual fidelity. Try out different kinds of controllers to find the one that suits you best. Stream on!
Finally, take advantage of the Steam Input Latency Test or a frame-counter mod (if it’s available for the casino game you play) to get an instant diagnosis of your input lag. Alternatively, stream your gameplay at high frame rates using OBS or another frame-accurate streaming program and see if the sounds from your mouse clicks and keystrokes match up perfectly with what you see on-screen. Also don’t forget to test your connection speed and ping while actually playing your casino game.
It’s a simple thing to measure input lag. Install any frame timer (MSI Afterburner or FRAPS), record, and then review the footage in slow motion. Don’t overthink it.
If you’re playing through a stream, check the latency of your internet connection with ping-testing software such as PingTest or whatever comes with your gaming platform. The lower the better. Experiment with controllers and streaming devices to find out what gives you the fastest reaction times.
Use cables whenever you can, and choose the streaming settings that minimize delay. This will maintain a smooth experience for both you and your viewers.
